Legend has it that a splendid nymph of unique beauty once lived here.

This nymph delighted passersby climbing the Costalunga Pass with her singing, but one day, the sorcerer of Masaré also heard her singing and fell in love with her. He tried to use all his powers to win her, but to no avail.

So the sorcerer asked for help from the witch Langwerda, who advised him to disguise himself as a jeweler and stretch a rainbow from the Catinaccio to the Latemar mountains, then go to Lake Carezza to lure the nymph and take her with him.

So the sorcerer drew the most beautiful rainbow he had ever seen between the two majestic mountains and went to the lake, forgetting to disguise himself.

The nymph was astonished by the rainbow colored with precious gems. But she soon noticed the sorcerer's presence and dived back into the lake's waters, disappearing!

The sorcerer, sad and resigned, tore the rainbow from the sky, destroying it, and throwing it into the lake.

This is why Lake Carezza is also known as the Rainbow Lake (in Ladin, Lech de l'ercaboan).
